8/19/2023 0 Comments Repairing lath and plaster wallsWhile demand for skilled plaster and cement masonry workers isn't as great as it is for electricians, plumbers or heating and air conditioning (HVAC) contractors, this is a great field for women. Others prefer the perfect, flat and smooth look of drywall. Some love the unique, hand crafted appearance that only comes with plaster. If you can repair it, it's smart to do so.ĭo you live in an older house with plaster walls? What are your feelings about keeping or replacing it? There are definitely two schools of thought on the topic. Damaged plaster doesn't mean that it should be replaced unless it's in terrible condition. It's denser, harder, provides more insulation, more sound buffering, and it just looks more appropriate in an older home. If you compare a pristine plaster wall with drywall, plaster always wins in performance. If you're not sure about how to use patching compound, watch the videos in our article, “ Tape & Mud at Habitat Women Build.” It's essentially the same process. Once dry, fine tune the surface using a damp sponge to give it that final, smooth finish. Let each coat dry before applying the next. You can also use drywall joint compound, although plaster purists might shake their heads at this idea. Apply the tape, then spread on plaster patching compound like you would repair drywall. More important, Tim Carter of Ask the Builder says it helps prevent cracks from coming back. Mesh tape helps cover many types of imperfections, and gives the fresh material something to grab. To overcome this, you'll need a patching material such as drywall mesh tape to help the wall flex instead of crack. That's because the house is always settling, and plaster is a very hard material. If you've ever tried to fix a crack in plaster, you already know that it usually comes back. Plaster Home Repair: Cracks and Imperfections Next, squirt in plaster adhesive, and slowly drive in the plaster repair screws until the plaster is snug against the lath again. You may get some new cracks in the plaster when it secures to the lath, but that's fixable.ĭrill small holes through the plaster and into the lath, then spray in some plaster conditioner. When driven through the plaster, the washer prevents the screw head from tearing through the plaster as it tightens it back to the lath. These are special screws with a wide washer. You can't reaffix the old keys, so you'll need to attach it through the front side using glue and plaster repair screws, says This Old House. Where the plaster is sound but has popped loose (has that telltale hollow noise when tapped), you'll need to glue and fasten it back. The whole wall is at risk of crumbling, and not a good candidate for repair. If you can tap loose more crumbles, then the original plaster mix was inferior. If some areas are crumbling, examine the rest of the wall. Intact is better, but hollow is usually salvageable. If there's a hard tap sound, then the plaster is still intact. If you hear a hollow sound, the plaster keys have broken and it has popped loose from the lath. Tap the plaster to determine whether it's still connected to the lath behind it. If it's starting to crumble in areas, you have to weigh the amount of effort needed for repair against the benefits of keeping it. If your plaster only has a few cracks, chances are it's salvageable. Plaster is a valuable material, but not every plaster wall is worth repairing. Plaster Home Repair: What's Worth Keeping A plaster wall is much thicker than drywall, and it has more fire resistance. Smooth layers of plaster are then skillfully applied over the scratch coat, ending with a finish layer that is so fine it requires little or no sanding. The plaster that squeezes through creates “keys” on the back side of the lath, which once hardened, hold the plaster onto the lath. The first layer is horizontal strips of wood, called lath (shown above), that are nailed horizontally across the studs.Ī scratch or brown coat of plaster goes over the lath, squeezing through the spaces between the lath. Where drywall comes in sheets that are nailed or screwed to the wall studs, plaster is built up in layers. The anatomy of a plaster wall is very different from drywall. But good plaster is superior to drywall, at least as far as performance goes. New drywall is better than plaster that's beyond repair. To others, plaster is original and should always be preserved.īoth of those statements are true and false, depending on the condition of your plaster. To some, plaster is old, and therefore modern drywall must be superior. Of the home repair jobs you'll consider in an older house, few are as contentious as whether to keep or trash the plaster walls. 8/19/2023 0 Comments White tidal logoCritics are quick to point out that this limits the ability to measure the changes made to the files from the original. 8/19/2023 0 Comments Portal turret meme genWhile the Portal games were created using the same CGI as the modern Transformers movies, the creators wanted to make a world that emphasized realistic physics, as that is the core mechanic of the game. These robots look more like a magical swirling cloud of spikes than anything hinged or mechanical. A bad example, on the other hand, is the modern Transformers reboot, where the aesthetic was driven by complex rendering software that is good at pumping out polygons. This meant that Hasbro could make working toys fairly easily - sticking to realistic toy mechanisms drove the aesthetic of the cartoon. A good example is the 1980's Transformers toy line - the transformation from vehicle to robot made sense even if the range of motion of the anthropomorphized robots were fudged to make them more human like. In videogames and movies, almost nothing is designed by an engineer and if a mechanism seems to make sense to the casual observer it's good enough. When I began thinking about the Portal Turret I knew it wouldn't be a simple conversion from a 3d object created using surface or NURBS space to solid or Parametric space. I've been using SolidWorks for the past 14 years in school and as a professional to make consumer products as an industrial designer, but every project presents new challenges. Loctite power grip pressure pack (glue) 2" & 3/4" thick pink foam insulation sheets * All photos were taken by me with an iPhone4 except for the hero shot on the blue background, which was done by the ThinkGeek staff photographer, Chris Hoyer. Aphius - This flickr page chronicles a valiant effort to make a full scale Turret with papercraft. TJ Coffey - This flickr page shows an amazing working Turret with pop-out wings and airsoft guns. Voplin props made an amazing Portal gun and every other project on their page is mind-blowing as well. His is at a different scale, uses other production methods, and contains more electronics. Citizen Snips, who started his Turret around the same time as I did, but managed to finish his in a more reasonable amount of time. I'd like to acknowledge some other builders who inspired me to this huge project: I'd guess that it weighs around 20 pounds, but it's such an odd shape that it's impossible to lift in one piece - the front legs tend to fall out. The entire model is about 48" tall at the top of the egg, with another 10" of antenna above that. This project took me a good 200 hours in my spare time after work over the course of several months and several hundred dollars worth of materials. The Turret proved to be a special challenge since it's so spindly and transforms in ways that leave no room for internal mechanisms. I had access to some behind the scenes assets, but they weren't nearly as helpful as you'd think - carefully examining screen-captures is best. When I made this my company, ThinkGeek, was working with Valve to develop a number of licensed products and toys related to the two Portal videogames, so I was already taking a close look at how to recreate these virtual objects in the real world, just not at such an ambitious scale. It turned into a far more involved project than I expected, so be warned: this project is not for the faint of heart. This instructable is a walk-through of how I made my life-sized Turret from the videogame Portal. 8/19/2023 0 Comments Thefappening claire abbottAnd even more - great opportunities allowed popular girls to behave so shamelessly that it was even difficult to believe! Of course, the biggest response was caused by leaked photos of Jennifer Lawrence nude, as well as Emma Watson and Karen Gillan.īut for you and me, for real fappers, everything is different! We know that celebrities are depraved and immoral, we watch all their shameless antics. It was then that millions of fans realized that their idols are not perfect pictures from screens, but ordinary people who are subject to the same vices as you and I. These leaked photos were posted online and devide our view of celebrities on Before and After For ordinary people, the term Fappening is synonymous with the events that occurred in 2014, when a group of hackers gained access to the personal accounts of millions of people, including celebrities. Schumacker, reminded that the excellent “ The Bear” (one of his key Emmy competitors) produced just eight episodes last year, pipes in: “I thought you were gonna say, like, a small sandwich shop in Chicago, perhaps.TheFappening is something that we all love, and we no longer think about the meaning of this word and where it came from. Halpern has an apt analogy for the current moment: “You’re comparing one restaurant that is in a tiny space versus this restaurant that has to serve hundreds of people every single day.” A full season order is a different beast and deserves its own accolade. Maybe there needs to be a category for shows that produce 18 or more episodes in the course of an eligibility window. Perhaps we’ve been looking at it the wrong way. “The West Wing,” “Law & Order,” “The Practice,” “ER” - all were signature shows of the 1990s and early 2000s that won the drama prize and are considered classics of their time.īroadcast still has strong shows. We remember that show’s conceit - every episode represented one hour in a day, which meant 24 episodes for 24 hours. The last broadcast series to win a drama Emmy was Fox’s “24,” in 2006. Those 10 episodes all have to be a part of a piece, and there’s no real wiggle room.” “And you can’t do that in a show that has 10 episodes. “The thing it allows you to do is you can do smaller stories that are very character based,” Halpern says. Viewers can develop a deeper bond with shows - that’s why so many of the library titles on streaming services are comedies and dramas with deep episodic counts, like “NCIS,” “The Office” and “Friends.” It allows stories and characters to breathe. Schumacker’s fellow exec producer, Justin Halpern, notes that the 22-episode season gives the audience a completely different experience. “It’s just gratifying to hear that despite the volume of episodes, I don’t think anyone thinks that the quality has gone down.” “It’s hard to make 10 episodes of good television, and to try and do it 22 times is pretty difficult,” “Abbott Elementary” exec producer Patrick Schumacker told me prior to the strike. And in comedy, only “ Abbott Elementary” even hit 13 episodes (because it was a midseason premiere this year, “Abbott” produced 22). Last year, in drama, no show produced a season with more than 10 episodes. The last full 22-or-more-episode show to win a series Emmy was “Modern Family” in 2014. No way.Īnd yet, that used to be the TV norm. I sometimes ask film auteurs who have moved to TV - and make a six-episode passion project - whether they could ever fulfill a massive 22-episode order. It honestly reminds me of the ongoing debate over whether it’s fair to lump broadcast shows with full 22-episode seasons in with shorter-order, more bespoke 8-episode seasons that are now found on streaming and premium cable.īroadcast is a different beast. But it wasn’t a sweeping, long piece of magazine journalism, and so it rightfully shouldn’t be compared to a 3,500-word opus. It was a fun piece to report, and I got to tell a quick, first-hand account of how things all went down. I bring all this up not just to boast, but also to note that one of the categories in which I was nominated was for “feature under 1,000 words,” for a piece I did giving a behind-the-scenes account of how Netflix revived the comedy “Girls5eva” after it was canceled by Peacock. Now it’s my turn to say, “For Your Consideration.” And humble brag alert, I received nine nominations myself this year. My colleagues earning top “journalist of the year” nods in various fields included Tim Gray, Clayton Davis, Owen Gleiberman, Chris Willman and Dan D’Addario. We write about every one else’s awards shows all the time, so I’d like to take a moment first and let Variety take a victory lap for its recent record 96 nominations for the Los Angeles Press Club’s SoCal Journalism awards. 8/19/2023 0 Comments Best budget keypad door locksThis makes the entire Ring Alarm system even better. You can always contact me if you’d like more detail on the project I describe. The way to handle this is really easy…both the break and continue statements in PHP have optional integer arguments where you can specify how many structures to break out of!ĭon’t worry, I’m not going to paste in my whole solution and let you find the interesting bits. I quickly realized that the break statement I placed to break out of the month search loop was only breaking out of the case statement! So when it went looking for the next month, it wouldn’t find it and as such would run the digit match routine! I found that the script would hit this every time, even though I placed it where it should only run if the month string wasn’t found. That was easy enough, but what I found that some users would enter a numeric month day, or day month. The routine I’m working on looks to see if the user entered a month if a particular code (EDD) has been entered into the field. I won’t bore you with the details, but suffice it to say, “Yay Reg Ex!” □ The issue is that the comments are a single string (meaning that users may enter several things into the same field (its a Meditech thing), and that this is free text. I’m currently working on a project that requires me to parse through comments entered into our Meditech Hospital Information System, looking for key phrases and performing certain actions based on these key phrases. Its one of those things that I don’t really think about when I’m banging out code, and that I can miss when I go back to see why things aren’t working. The statement list for a case can also be empty, which simply passes control into the statement list for the next case. One of the most frequent “gotchas” that I run into are breaking out of loops properly. If your condition is more complicated than a simple compare and/or is in a tight loop, a switch may be faster. In an elseif statement, the condition is evaluated again. In a switch statement, the condition is evaluated only once and the result is compared to each case statement. Thus, it is important not to forget break statements (even though you may want to avoid supplying them on purpose under certain circumstances). You would get the expected behavior (‘i equals 2’ would be displayed) only if $i is equal to 2. Here, if $i is equal to 0, PHP would execute all of the echo statements! If $i is equal to 1, PHP would execute the last two echo statements. If you don’t write a break statement at the end of a case’s statement list, PHP will go on executing the statements of the following case. PHP continues to execute the statements until the end of the switch block, or the first time it sees a break statement. Only when a case statement is found with a value that matches the value of the switch expression does PHP begin to execute the statements. without a break statement, ‘each’ of the lines will execute. You neglected to mention the need for the break statement. The default term is comparable to the else statement. As for the default:, it means that if none of the other conditions are satisfied, do the statements following the default. So, use break at the end of your case block to break out of the switch statement unless you want the following cases to be executed. If we didn’t use break, PHP would continue to execute the other conditions in the switch statement. Finally, we come to the break, which signals the end of the if like statement. After that colon, we have our statements to be executed. Instead, the case is followed by the conditional variable. However, we can see that we do not have to repeat that boring comparison operator over and over. The entire switch is implicitly using the = that we saw in the if statements earlier. The syntax is slightly different than an if statement. Example $x = 3 Ĭase 1: //this statement is the same as if($x = 1)Ĭase 2: //this statement is the same as if($x = 2)Ĭase 3: //this statement is the same as if($x = 3)Ĭase 4: //this statement is the same as if($x = 4)ĭefault: //this statement is the same as if $x does not equal the other conditions Whilst these statement constructs work well for testing a limited number of conditions they quickly become unwieldy when dealing with larger numbers of possible. The simple syntax of switch statements provide more readable code as opposed to using a lot of else if statements. If statements check one conditional, but switch statements can check for many different cases. As you use them, you will begin to realize why they are much more convenient that writing a whole lot of if statements or elseif statements. The PHP switch statement is pretty much a simplified way to write multiple if statements for one variable. 8/18/2023 0 Comments Koh tao snorkelingNo complaints but perhaps those with younger children should take this into consideration as the trio out and back was over an hour each way. Boat journey was a little bumpy, nothing troublesome for some however kids struggled and we had to turn around after 10 minutes of travelling for a whole family and a half to leave the trip due to the motion sickness. Organisation was good and we left after about 20-30 minutes of arriving at the pier. Mr Tu's pier has free tea and coffee and doughballs with condensed milk sauce. Amazing snorkelling with massive fish! It is an 8 hour day and worth every penny - we loved it! Unlimited soft drinks and beer on the boat. The team are just brilliant at helping on and off the boat each time - so patient and kind. Then two more snorkelling stops from the boat. fab food, plenty of it in a beautiful setting on the beach. Next stop was lunch at Sairee Beach on Koh Tao. The first stop was Koh Nangyuan and wow! Simply breathtaking! Great snorkelling and beautiful beaches. We had a light breakfast on the pier before starting - gorgeous fried donuts with sweet condensed milk topping! The boat ride to the first stop was 2 hours - after half an hour the sea became super choppy even in bright sunshine with no storms or wind - be warned, you’re offered a sea sickness tablet at the pier for a reason - accept it! We were fine but many weee not and there was a lot of sickness on the boat! The Mr Tu team we’re amazing with this - really kind and had plenty of sick bags! We sat on the outside where conditions allowed and it was a stunning trip - in spite of some passengers being ill. Wow what a day! Brilliantly organised from pick-up right to the end. 8/18/2023 0 Comments Air optix colors 2 pack cheapThough contact lenses are a safe form of optical correction, it is only safe if all the guidelines for proper care and wear are followed.
